The school language programme covers reading, writing (including language use), spelling, listening and talking.

Reading is taught by a combined whole-word and letter-sound approach. At the Early Stages, Oxford Reading Tree is used as the main resource in reading while Foundations of Writing is the main resource for writing and handwriting. As the children progress through the school and have mastered the basic skills of literacy, they are introduced to different language materials, i.e. Story Chest, Directions, Nelson English, Blackwell Spelling and Nelson Handwriting. Listening and talking are supported using Oracy.

By using the above materials within a structured framework the school ensures that each child covers all aspects of English language as laid down in the National 5/14 Guidelines.
